History of New River Sail      & Power Squadron

New River Sail & Power Squadron

A Unit of United States Power Squadrons, Inc.®

Sail and Power Boating — District 27  . . . "America's Boating Club"

New River Sail and Power Squadron can trace its earliest roots back to September 1, 1959 when a group of 12 Onslow County residents held a three-hour long organizational meeting at 414 Woodland Drive in Jacksonville.  Those founding members were:

  • Milton S. Adler
  • Kenneth M. Ford
  • Francis J. Bauer
  • R. P. Schreckingos
  • Norman C. Harvey
  • Robert H. Kalet
  • Thomas J. Mayscuk
  • George H. Brandt
  • Charls T. Streeter
  • JamesD Piver
  • William M. Derby, Jr.
  • W. E. Bown

At that time, the name New River Power Squad was their first choice for a name for the proposed unit; with Onslow Bay Power Squadron being their second choice.  There was a unanimous vote to petition the Governing Board for a charter; and to adopt the proposed By-Laws.

The first officers of this new chapter were also elected:   Milton S. Adler was the unit's first Commander, to be assisted by Lt. Commander, Robert H. Kalet; 1st Lieutenant, Kenneth M. Ford; and Secretary-Treasurer, Norman C. Harvey.   Members at large of the Executive Committee were Charles T. Streeter, James D. Piver and George H. Brandt.

And the rest, as they say . . . is history!
